Hey! Welcome to this little blog of mine. I'm Katie, a Nebraskan and Midwesterner at heart who loves routine and certainty, but is currently pursuing a career in academia: the most uncertain place in the world. I am a Ph.D. student in Anthropology at the University of Missouri, and while I LOVE this career path I'm on, I also love my health and my sanity, so I am constantly, consciously, attempting to keep my life as well-rounded as possible. This involves exercise, time with friends, and lots and lots of time spent shamelessly watching The Bachelor. Because I love it.
I named this blog "Kate the Great" for a couple of reasons. First, because my favorite teacher in high school, Mr. Dougherty, called me Kate the Great. The nickname has kind of stuck around in the family for the last million years since then, and every time I hear it, I think of him and smile. Second, because I don't believe in playing small in life. You should stand up, shout out your dreams to anyone who will listen, and shine your light for everyone to see!!! "Kate the Great" reminds me to be bold, even when it isn't easy, and strive for greatness.
This blog is a place where I share a number of different aspects of my life and my interests with you all. I am a yoga teacher, a runner, a traveler. I have two chubby pets: a dog named Walter and a cat named Nellie. I love them, they love me, and they begrudgingly accept each other.
I am passionately committed to following my dreams and encouraging others to follow theirs as well (hence the yoga teaching thing). I find it incredibly inspiring to read about other people's successes and struggles on their own paths to BRILLIANTness, so I'll share some of mine with you, too… and hope there are more successes than struggles.
I also this blog to share my academic pursuits with anyone who is bored enough to read them. More specifically, I am getting ready to spend 10 months of 2014 living in rural Bangladesh, completing my research project for my dissertation. I will share pictures, thoughts on fieldwork, and thoughts on life, and stories from my journey.
So, thanks for visiting. Come on along with me. And always share your thoughts - I desperately want to hear them!

"Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all."
And she was right, darlings.
